Some online quizzes and tests require students to log in through a secure browser known as the Respondus LockDown Browser. Students are required to install this browser on the computer they plan to use to complete a quiz or test. Students should install and test this browser well in advance of a test or quiz to be sure it is working.
Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure browser for taking tests or quizzes. Without this software, you may not be able to access and complete some quizzes or tests in your Canvas courses. This is a free installation.

Installing the Respondus LockDown Browser
Click here to access the download for this installation. There is a version for MAC and one for PC. Once you reach the installation page, it may recognize the type of operating system you are using and display this information for you.
Logging in to Canvas using the Respondus Lockdown Browser
After you install the browser, locate it on your computer and click on it to launch. Select Canvas from the pull-down menu to indicate the learning management system that you need to log into. Enter your username and password for Canvas.

What are the computer requirements for Respondus LockDown Browser?
Windows: 11, 10* and 8.
* Includes x86 32 and 64bit processors and ARM 64bit processors using x86 emulation.
* Windows 10S is not a compatible operating system, nor can LockDown Browser be obtained via the Windows App Store.
Mac: macOS 10.12 to 12.0+
ChromeOS: LockDown Browser for Chromebook is supported on ChromeOS version 88 and higher.
Can a Chromebook be used with LockDown Browser?
A Chromebook extension for LockDown Browser is available for exams delivered in Canvas.
To install the extension to a Chromebook, students will need to use the regular LockDown Browser installation link for your school (they will NOT be able to search for the app directly from the Chrome web store.) The LockDown Browser installation link will direct students to the Chrome web store, at which point they should select “Add to Chrome” to install the LockDown Browser Extension.
How should I prepare to take an exam using LockDown Browser?
Find a quiet, comfortable, private room or area to take your exam.
Inform family or housemates that you will be taking an exam. The presence of others will be detected by Respondus and could generate a report of suspicious activity.
Clear the area of textbooks or other class materials.
Put away your phone and do not wear headphones or earbuds.
Turn off music, TV shows, movies, or podcasts.
Position your webcam so that your face is illuminated, with no lights or windows behind you.
Upon set up, you may be asked to display a photo ID. Have your photo ID ready.
Can I use Kurzweil Read The Web with LockDown Browser?
LockDown Browser for Windows version 2.0.7.08 and higher offers a built-in Kurzweil Read The Web extension. Students will need a valid Kurzweil account in order to take advantage of this feature. This extension includes the "read web page," "move cursor forward," and "move cursor back" features.
