A Tradition of Sharing Generously at Waubonsee

In 2011, a prior Marine and member of the Waubonsee Veterans Club/SALUTE began the college’s annual involvement in the Marine Toys for Tots initiative to distribute toys to less fortunate children at Christmas. Since then, the Veterans Club/SALUTE at Waubonsee has continued this tradition each holiday season as a way for military-connected students and other student organizations at Waubonsee to share generously with our local community.

Waubonsee Partners with Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center During National Apprenticeship Week

Waubonsee Community College has formed a new partnership with the Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center (IMEC) to be the educational provider for their Industrial Manufacturing Technician apprenticeship. Waubonsee is the first community college in the State of Illinois to partner with IMEC.  
 

A Statement on the Death of Board of Trustee Chair Emeritus Richard “Shorty” W. Dickson

Waubonsee Community College Board of Trustees Chair Emeritus Richard “Shorty” W. Dickson, passed away on November 9, 2021. Mr. Dickson served on the board from 1972 until 1987 and then again from 1989 until April 2019. In those years he served as an officer of the board for 40 years, 29 years as chair, and 11 years as vice chair.

As the temperatures drop and the leaves turn to marvelous autumn hues, the change in season also provides a rich opportunity to slow our own tempo, to pause, reflect, and be thankful for one another; thankful that community colleges bring many different people together for a common purpose: learning and empowerment.

Waubonsee Celebrates Native American Heritage Month

Waubonsee Community College will host several programs to educate and raise awareness about Native American heritage, culture, traditions, and customs during Native American Heritage Month. These events will honor the generations of Native Americans who have shaped America’s legacy by sharing their stories while also examining the complicated intersection between First Nations people and colonial/settler histories. 

Waubonsee Earns Tree Campus Higher Education Recognition

For the tenth consecutive year, Waubonsee Community College has achieved national recognition as a Tree Campus Higher Education institution. The Tree Campus Higher Education is a program established in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation and honors colleges and universities for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation. 

Waubonsee Board of Trustees Statement of Confidence in President Sobek and the College's COVID-19 Protocols

The Waubonsee Community College Faculty Council Union attended the October board meeting to announce the passing of a no confidence vote. Board of Trustees Chair Rebecca Oliver has issued a statement on behalf of the Board of Trustees:  

“The Waubonsee Community College Board of Trustees stands united in its unequivocal support of Dr. Christine Sobek, President of Waubonsee Community College, and her leadership in instituting health and safety measures that follow federal guidelines and state mandate protocols to keep the campus community safe and healthy.”
