The Waubonsee Community College Foundation has received its largest single donation to date, in the amount of $348,000, from the estate of John (Jay) and LaVeral (Lea) Fitz. This gift establishes the “John and LaVeral Fitz Endowed Scholarship,” in memory of its benefactors. As per their wishes, the awards generated from this scholarship will be split equally toward students pursuing nursing or fine arts majors. 

Waubonsee Community College has partnered with Northern Trust to strengthen its cybersecurity workforce by developing a cybersecurity apprenticeship program. The partnership centers on educating and training Waubonsee cybersecurity students through an “earn and learn” model in the Northern Trust Cyber Coordination Center. 

Nominations are currently being accepted for Waubonsee Community College’s 2023 Distinguished Contributor and Distinguished Alumnus Awards. Nominations for 2023 will be accepted until January 28, 2023.

At the beginning of each semester, I begin my biology classes at Waubonsee by sharing a borrowed slogan from the Local Chicago Council on Science and Technology. "Science is for everyone." I do this because this idea perfectly highlights the importance of diversifying the future STEM workforce of America. It also creates a welcoming space for those curious about STEM but discouraged because they have not seen representation in the field. 

Waubonsee Community College Campus Police and other local law enforcement agencies will host an active shooter training on the Sugar Grove Campus from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, August 12.

Waubonsee Community College, Elgin Community College, and Kishwaukee College have partnered with the Kane County Office of Community Reinvestment to offer job skills training services through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).

Last September , I wrote a column about new pathways to integrate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) into higher education learning communities. In that article, I offered four practical steps to align organizational culture to ensure that higher education is accessible and available to all. I also highlighted that before the critical work of DEI can begin, there must be an institutional-wide commitment to embrace it. 

Waubonsee Community College is pleased to announce the establishment of the Dr. Christine J. Sobek Endowed Scholarship Fund, in recognition of Dr. Sobek’s 21 years of distinguished service, commitment, leadership, and contributions as President of the college upon her retirement.

Visitors to Waubonsee Community College's Latinx Resource Center (LRC) located at the Aurora Downtown Campus will notice a bright mural with a colorful display of imagery rooted in diverse Latinx heritage, culture, strength, and pride.

I had finally finished moving into my residence hall room at Illinois State University (ISU). I had just said goodbye to my family and watched them drive away. As I got into the elevator to head back up to my room, I was full of emotion, and my face must have reflected that because the man in the elevator looked at me and said, “just walk around this place like you belong- you got this!”  Little did he know what an impact those words would make on me at the time.
