Waubonsee’s Move to Alternative Delivery

After spring break this year, the college moved to what we called alternative delivery to allow for remote instruction. Although the college’s alternative delivery strategy was seeded in an intense and confusing time, what grew out of it has significantly transformed the college for the better. When we launched into alternative delivery, it quickly became apparent how resilient and incredibly productive we could all be despite the circumstances.

One Student’s Experience at Waubonsee

My heart is filled with joy whenever I think of my experiences as a student and student trustee at Waubonsee Community College.

An Open Letter to the Graduating Class of 2020

When I was asked to be the 2020 commencement faculty marshal for Waubonsee Community College, I was truly honored because commencement is my very favorite day of the school year. I envisioned myself leading Waubonsee faculty into the Field House followed by each of you as graduates walking in while your family and friends proudly watch. Then the crisis we never saw coming came. Coronavirus changed all of our lives and plans.

Serving College Students In Unprecedented Times

Unprecedented. I feel like almost everything I read anymore has this word somewhere in the first sentence. It’s true. These are unprecedented times for all of us. At Waubonsee Community College we’re very aware of the struggle, not just for us as employees, but especially for our students. In Student Development we are working hard to make sure we can maintain the services students need and want to be successful.

The Importance—and Safety—of the Census

I was in high school in 2000 the first time I was involved in the U.S. census. My mom asked me to fill out the census form. She was concerned because she saw that it was mandatory but didn’t feel comfortable filling it out. She asked me to help her since I was the oldest. What stood out to me was all of the pages on the paper form. I was only a teen so I was confused by all of the questions about my family such as how many of us lived in our home and our ages.

Health Information Technology and the Coronavirus

The outbreak of the coronavirus has raised concerns and questions about health and prevention of diseases. There are many people working every day to lower the concerns and answer the questions about the coronavirus. Many of those people are health information management (HIM) professionals. With the ongoing spread of the coronavirus, the vital role of the health information professionals has become even more important.

Benefits of Exercise

Popular culture bombards us with messages regarding the benefits of regular exercise. It is widely known that physical activity helps to facilitate weight loss, improves sleep, and reduces the risk of some diseases including: cardiovascular disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes. Yet, according to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), only 20% of adults meet both cardio and strength training guidelines.

Why Career and Technical Education is Important to Us All

February is a month that acknowledges some very well-known observances and holidays. Black history month, American Heart Association month, the birthdays of Lincoln and Washington, and even Valentine’s Day. However, it is also CTE Month®, which celebrates the value of Career and Technical Education! Why is CTE something we should celebrate? Because CTE impacts us all every day!

Reach for the Stars

Waubonsee's observatory is a valuable asset to the college and surrounding communities.

The Importance of Mental Health and Wellness

“Happy New Year” is a greeting we’ve heard and seen a lot during the past few weeks. While friendly and innocuous enough, the greeting can gloss over the fact that many of us are anything but happy during the cold, dark months of winter. With the holidays behind us, January is a good time to take stock of our personal mental wellness and that of our family and friends.
