Two significant achievements were celebrated when Mark Burton received his degree at Waubonsee Community College this week. The first is that Burton, of Aurora, said he never thought he’d earn a college degree, and the second is that he will be the first student to complete the new Automotive Transportation Service Technology degree.

The annual commencement ceremony at Waubonsee Community College is always a highlight, as the goals and dreams that students have worked so hard toward – with the support of dedicated faculty and staff – are achieved and celebrated. This year is especially memorable as we celebrate our 50^th anniversary.

When I walked across the stage at the Geneva High School graduation ceremony two short years ago, I was excited but nervous. I had already decided to continue my education at Waubonsee Community College, but I was uncertain this would all take shape. While I have crammed plenty of learning into the short time since then, it is the connections I made with my professors and peers that truly defined my time at Waubonsee, and will continue to influence my life down the road.

When Rose Ann Whiteside, who describes herself as “73-years-young,” receives her diploma during Waubonsee Community College commencement ceremonies this weekend, it will mark the beginning of a new chapter and career for a great-grandmother whose long list of previous roles include beautician, auto mechanic, riveter for Boeing, waitress, caretaker, book keeper and more.

Waubonsee Community College’s 2017 commencement ceremonies provided a celebratory highlight of the college’s 50^th anniversary year, as a record number of graduates participated on May 13.
