My mom was a math teacher in India. She was a high school math teacher, so she influenced me a lot. Also my math teachers middle school, elementary and high school influenced me a lot. Growing up, math was my favorite subject. Whatever I learned, I was able to connect math in everything.
Why should someone consider a career in Math?
Math is connected to a lot of real-world applications and a lot of careers. I think I would say math is applied in almost every field. And if they're not directly applying it in their career, they will definitely apply it in their life.
How would you describe your teaching style and what can students expect in class with you?
I try to include a lot of examples, not just numerical examples, but also applications. I try to include examples from different walks of life, so students can see that math is applied. I include games, projects, some case studies, And when I'm teaching math for elementary teachers, students do some teaching demos.
What do you find most rewarding about studying and teaching math?
When my students share their stories about how they applied what we learned in class in their life or in their career, that "Aha!" moment is what is most rewarding to me.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I enjoy crocheting and I enjoy making jewelry. My hobbies are actually connected with math, and when I apply my math, it makes me really happy.
