There’s more to art history than you might think.

Art history is defined as the study of the historical developments of visual arts in all societies, from prehistory through the present. What this means is that students can explore the personal, political, sociological and religious factors that inspire artistic creation over time, across all areas of the world, in a wide variety of mediums.

Art history also calls upon students to use and develop their analytical, critical thinking and writing skills—all exceptional qualities that apply to any career. And in our increasingly visual world, understanding the impact of art over time helps to interpret new and evolving art forms.

Students in Waubonsee’s art history classes discuss major artistic trends and movements framed by an examination of historical context and social environment.
