What do you teach?

I teach earth science and astronomy, face-to-face and online sections of both. I was mostly hired as a geologist. So I also teach geology classes too.

Why should someone consider a career in science?

Because it's fun. It's never the same thing twice.

How would you describe your teaching style and what can students expect in class with you?

Active learning. One of the things that I like to do, is bring in current events to my classes. So I spend a lot of time keeping up with NASA and James Space Telescope for my astronomy classes. Again, this is science that is changing on a daily basis, and the more engaged you are, the more efficient the learning process.

What does it take to be successful in science?

Curiosity and a willingness to follow through on the questions that you may have. And also, at least in the geosciences, good powers of observation.

What do you like to do outside of work?

We have a 54-stall horse farm, so I help out around the farm. Also, I am a passionate, obsessed espresso drinker. On a trip to Italy I fell in love with the flavor of espresso. The only way I found to duplicate that flavor was to start roasting my own beans.
