Waubonsee Community College invites the community and students to attend “Resilience in Real Time: Men of Color Redefining Strength in College.” This free networking event is open to the public and will be held on Wednesday, April. 1, from 3 to 4 p.m. at its Aurora Downtown Campus, located at 18 S. River St. The program features a panel of male professionals of color sharing their personal journeys, challenges, and strategies for success. The following topics will be discussed in a safe space for dialogue, reflection, and connection:
- Financial pressures and balancing responsibilities
- Mental health and wellness
- Finding belonging on campus
- Mentorship and building support systems
“This idea comes from our work with male students of color, especially Latino males, who have shared the challenges they face and how culture, family, and responsibilities shape their college experience,” said Franklin Ortega-Palaguachi, Latinx Resource Center Manager. “Many Latino male students hesitate to ask for help and often try to handle things on their own because cultural expectations say men should always have the answers, even though that's not always the case.”
This event is hosted by Waubonsee’s Latinx Resource Center and The Peer Support Program. Visit calendar.waubonsee.edu to learn more.
