One of the pluses of majoring in computer science is that it opens up a lot of different pathways.
Q&A with Tim Moriarty
How did you become interested in Computer Science?
I come from a family of computer scientists and educators. I had computing devices around me growing up, probably from the late 70s/early 80s. I also had an influential babysitter growing up who was in high school at the time and was really into acquiring computer games on a Commodore 64. So he shared all those with me and that was my first time writing computer code.
What do you find most rewarding about studying and teaching CIS?
So it's really the human aspect and interactions and seeing students pursue their goals and dreams. Here at Waubonsee, you can do so in a high quality and affordable way.
Is there a specific area of CIS and/or teaching that you’re particularly passionate about?
I've enjoyed teaching web application development. That's a great way for people to utilize their software engineering skills and build an actual working piece of software in a manageable amount of time. There's demand for that in industry. I also enjoyed teaching an app development class. After a couple introductory computer science classes, you can build a working app on an iPhone or Android.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I enjoy watching NBA basketball and the Chicago Bulls in particular. I enjoy live music a lot. Also, running, cycling, and general exercise. I am in the process of getting my Ph.D. And I just wrapped up my first Dungeons and Dragons campaign.
