Dr. Charles Smith is a nationally recognized self-taught artist, sculptor, historian and storyteller whose work preserves and interprets the Black experience through powerful depictions of history, struggle, resilience and triumph. A Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient, Dr. Smith transformed his Aurora home and property into the African-American Heritage Museum and Black Veterans’ Archive, creating hundreds of sculptures honoring historical figures, everyday people and pivotal moments in African American history. His work has since reached audiences far beyond Aurora and is represented in major museum collections across the country, including the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History!
