As part of ongoing efforts by Waubonsee Community College to celebrate its 50th anniversary through community service, several student groups recently completed large projects coinciding with the holiday season.

Recipients of the college’s Lucile Gustafson Scholarship made and distributed 200 holiday cards for residents of Elmwood Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Jennings Terrace Inc. They also donated 117 winter clothing items for the Fox Valley United Way, four boxes of food for Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry. Among the items donated for the pantry were 350 diapers, containers of formula, 55 canned food items, 20 bags of food and other assorted items.

Another large service project was coordinated by students in the Early Childhood Education (ECE) program, as they purchased and wrapped gifts for nearly 120 needy children for the holiday season. The annual service project was started a year ago by ECE student Ashton Newkirk, of North Aurora, as a student advocacy project, and continued this year. For this year’s efforts, she was able to recruit more than 50 fellow Waubonsee students to assist in purchasing and wrapping gifts.
