Waubonsee Community College nursing student Stephanie Banks, of Plano, has become the first Waubonsee student to receive a scholarship through the Quad County African American Chamber of Commerce.

The scholarship, worth $1,250, was awarded during the Quad County African American Chamber’s Annual Jazz Brunch on Feb. 8 at the Hotel Arista in Naperville.

Waubonsee TRiO Upward Bound Manager Robert Cook introduced Banks during the ceremony at the event.

Students seeking the scholarship needed to be African American; have earned a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0; and be pursuing a degree in business, science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

They also needed to have two references, and have completed an essay of at least 500 words explaining how they would use their education to “advance the African American community,” according to the application materials distributed by the Quad County chamber.

The Quad County African American Chamber of Commerce represents the interests of and addresses issues facing African American-owned businesses in the counties of Kane, DuPage, Kendall and Will counties.
