Waubonsee Community College will offer a new music class this summer. The course will introduce students to the art of writing a song.

The credit course will present methods used in composing a song in the style of today’s popular music. Topics will include lyric writing, song form, harmony and melody and will give students the opportunity to experience creating their own piece of music.

“Many people play a musical instrument or sing but have never tried their hand at writing a piece of music. Some who already write music may want to simply hone their craft a bit and collaborate with others. We want to give people the tools they could use to experience the joy of creating their own lyrics and tune,” said Dr. Mark Lathan, Assistant Professor of Music and the creator and teacher of this course.

The course is MUS296 Special Topics in Music: Introduction to Songwriting. It meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. The course is 8-weeks long and begins on June 10. The only prerequisite for this course is a knowledge of piano, guitar or other chording instruments.
