Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, observed from May 1 through May 31, honors the many contributions and accomplishments of Asian Americans, Pacific Islander Americans, and Native Hawaiians. During the month of April, Waubonsee Community College will celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to pay tribute before the spring semester ends to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched our history. This month-long programming is free and open to the public.  

  • “East Meets West: A Cultural Experience”: The Asian American and Pacific Islander Waubonsee Student Club invites you to a cultural event that will immerse you in East Asian culture. Attendees will learn how to make origami, decorate their own fan, and practice chopstick techniques. The club will also host a fundraiser and sell goodie bags filled with Asian candies. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 4 from noon to 3 p.m.
     
  • “The Art of Henna”: Learn about the history and cultural significance of the art of henna. Free, small henna tattoos, provided by Prairie Henna by Julie, will be available on a first come, first serve basis. This event will take place on Tuesday, April 11 from noon to 2 p.m. 
  • “Celebrate India”: Participants will explore the performing and visual arts of India. This cultural program will feature a variety of music, dance, and fashion and will take place on Wednesday, April 19 at 12:30 p.m.
     
  • “Every Now and Zen”: Breathe in the fresh air as you are guided through meditation and gentle stretches. This outdoor exercise will be held on Wednesday, April 26 at 12:30 p.m. 
     
  • Luau on the Lawn – Lei Day”: Join us for a Luau as we celebrate Lei Day and Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Learn about the history of hula and enjoy a beginner’s hula class facilitated by Kuma June of Halau i Ka Pono Hawaiian Hula School. Enjoy live Hawaiian music, free food, island-themed drinks, crafts and more. This outdoor event will take place on Monday, May 1 from noon to 2 p.m.
