Waubonsee Honored with Regional Equity Award
Waubonsee Community College recently received the 2012 Central Regional Equity Award from the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). Colleges are selected based on demonstrable evidence of leadership in setting policies, championing an environment of inclusiveness, and in assuring results for the enhancement and expansion of opportunities for minorities and women across the institution.
Winning the regional award places Waubonsee in contention for the national equity award from ACCT, which will be announced at the organization’s 43rd annual Leadership Congress in October.
Waubonsee has a long history of promoting inclusiveness, beginning with its sign language interpreter training program, which was the first of its kind in the state when it was established in 1975.
Since that time the college has continued to strive for equity through additional programs and services, such as the Access Center for Students with Disabilities; health care interpreting, legal interpreting and translation programs; and the creation of both a Governmental and Multicultural Affairs office and the Diversity Leadership Council. Students, faculty, staff and administrators are actively involved in college and community clubs and organizations representing minority communities.
