Waubonsee Student Receives Ted Brattin Civic Youth Award

Waubonsee Community College sophomore Alexandra Mistak, of Geneva, was one of 11 local students to receive a Brattin Civic Youth Award recently. Sponsored by the Navy League and the Rotary Club of Aurora, the awards recognize Fox Valley youth who have exhibited qualities of citizenship, service and leadership.

As one of Waubonsee’s prestigious Gustafson scholars, Mistak is expected to excel academically while also serving the college and larger community, and she has managed to accomplish all of that. A sociology major with a 4.0 grade point average, Mistak serves as president of the college’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international honor society for community colleges. She has led that group in a variety of volunteer activities including projects at Feed My Starving Children, the Tri-City Charity Telethon, Fox Valley River Clean-Up and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Mistak’s volunteerism reaches beyond her PTK membership, however. Last summer, she spent five weeks in New Orleans as part of the Youth With A Missions International (YWAM), and locally, she volunteers several hours each week at Tri-City Family Services in Geneva.
