Waubonsee SBDC Leads State in Business Start-Ups
The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity recently reported that the Illinois Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Waubonsee Community College led the state with 39 business start-ups in 2010. There are more than 35 SBDCs in Illinois.
Waubonsee SBDC Manager Harriet Parker attributes last year’s numbers to her office’s location in the state’s second-largest city, along with a lagging economy.
“With this economy, you have people who can’t get a job or who are looking to leave corporate America out of frustration with constant downsizing or a deteriorating work environment, and they want to start businesses,” Parker said.
The SBDC provides free counseling, advice and resources to new and existing small businesses in the area. Start-up clients in 2010 ranged from Preservation Bread and Wine in Geneva to the Steppin’ Out Dance Studio in Plano.
