Students Named to State Academic Team

Waubonsee Community College students Nadia Elgindy, of North Aurora, and Sarah Hay, of Aurora, have been chosen to represent the college on the All-Illinois Academic Team. Sponsored by the Illinois Community College Board, the Illinois Council of Community College Presidents, and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international honor society of two-year colleges, the academic team is comprised of students from each of the state’s community colleges, who are selected based on academic performance and service to their colleges and communities.

Elgindy has managed to maintain a 3.62 while working part-time as a pharmacy technician. Her interest in science led her to a third-place finish in last year’s Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) poster contest. She is a founding member of Waubonsee’s Students Organizing Sustainability (SOS) club, as well as an active member of the college’s PTK chapter, having helped with several of the club’s service projects, including dress donations through Cinderella’s Closet, walking in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, and packaging food at Feed My Starving Children.

An achiever inside and outside the classroom, Hay has maintained a 3.9 grade point average while leading several student organizations, including the Student Senate, “Insight” school newspaper and Phi Omicron chapter of PTK. With PTK, Hay has participated in the Juvenile Diabetes Association walk, a WTTW Channel 11 pledge drive, and a “Sleep Out” event to raise both awareness of and funds for the homeless.

Outside of Waubonsee, Hay is active in her church’s youth group. She helped organize a joint project between that group and the Conservation Foundation, which led to several members traveling to the Navajo Nation in Arizona to teach children about water conservation. For the past three years, she has also helped lead the church’s Care Pantry Christmas Party service project.
