Hay Receives Youth Award
Waubonsee Community College student Sarah Hay, of Aurora, was recently awarded a Ted Brattin Civic Youth Award by the Naperville/Aurora Rotary Club and the Aurora Navy League. Named for a local Navy veteran, the award honors 13- to 19-year-olds who demonstrate exceptional civic involvement and leadership. Hay was the only college student among this year’s 10 honorees.
An achiever inside and outside the classroom, Hay has maintained a 4.0 grade point average while leading several student organizations, including the Student Senate, “Insight” school newspaper and Phi Omicron chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). Through her involvement with PTK, she has participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, the Juvenile Diabetes Association walk, a WTTW Channel 11 pledge drive, and a “Sleep Out” event to raise both awareness of and funds for the homeless.
Outside of Waubonsee, Hay is active in her church’s youth group. She helped organized a joint project between that group and the Conservation Foundation, which led to several members traveling to the Navajo Nation in Arizona to teach children about water conservation.
