Waubonsee Community College’s softball team won both games of their doubleheader against Illinois Valley Community College, rallying from an early deficit to win game one 9-3 and scoring early and often to win game two 10-0. Waubonsee enters the Easter Holiday weekend with a 25-15 record, winning 14 of their last 16 games.

In the opener, the visiting Eagles grabbed an early 3-0 lead when Lauren Tjaden smacked a 3-run homer in the top of the first. Waubonsee clawed its way back and took a 4-3 lead at the end of three innings. The Chiefs then broke the game open with a 4-run fourth, highlighted by a two-run single by Kaitlyn Shaffer. Alycia DeLuca kept Illinois Valley’s bats in check from that point on to earn the victory, her 10th of the season. The right-hander allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked just two over seven innings of work.

Nicole Krupp finished the game 3 for 4 with a double and a run driven in as Waubonsee ripped 15 hits. Shaffer went 3 for 3 at the plate, while leadoff hitter Courtni Neubauer finished 2 for 3 with three runs scored. The speedy centerfielder also stole two bases to give her 52 on the season, breaking the Waubonsee single-season record of 51 set by Jami Swenson in 2007.  Liz Gagnon went 2 for 4 with a double and a run batted in, and Lexi Moky also went 2 for 4 with a run knocked in.

In game two Waubonsee took advantage of three walks, a pair of hit batters and a single to score three times in the first inning. The Chiefs tacked on four more in the second to take a commanding 7-0 lead when Mary Wackerlin drilled a three-run homer, her fifth of the season, to straight away center field.  Waubonsee added two more runs in the third when DeLuca ripped a two-out, two-run single over the third base bag. Wackerlin then led off the bottom of the fourth with a towering solo home run to left field to give the Chiefs a 10-0 lead. Krupp set the Eagles down in order in the fifth to end the game by the 10-run slaughter rule. The right-hander limited Illinois Valley to just two hits en route to picking up her seventh win of the season.

Wackerlin finished 2 for 2 with two homers, two runs scored, a walk and five runs driven in. Gagnon went 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles, while DeLuca was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and two knocked in. Krupp drilled a double and batted in a pair of runs, and Neubauer scored two runs and added her 52nd stolen base of the season. The sophomore from Burlington Central High School leads all NJCAA Division II players in stolen bases and is second nationally with 70 runs scored on the spring.

Waubonsee is in action again on Monday, April 17 when they host perennial power Rock Valley College in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader. The Golden Eagles (28-2) are currently the top-ranked NJCAA Division III in the country. The Chiefs are also set to host Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) foes Oakton Community College on Tuesday, April 18 and Moraine Valley Community College on Wednesday, April 19. The first pitch for both of those doubleheaders is also set for 3:00 p.m. each day. Waubonsee is aiming to clinch their seventh straight ISCC title.
