Chiefs honor sophomores before trouncing Trojans in last regular season home match

Waubonsee Community College’s volleyball team closed out the home portion of the regular season by thumping visiting Triton College in three straight games. After honoring the team’s sophomore players before the match, the Chiefs overwhelmed a Trojans squad that entered the evening with just three wins on the season. The Chiefs improved to 10-2 on their home court and 23-16 overall as the regular season winds down.

In game one Waubonsee led just 9-7 before Rachel Lape reeled off three straight serving aces to swing the momentum in the Chiefs’ favor.  Waubonsee went on to win the first game 25-15. Game two Waubonsee raced out to a 12-3 lead forcing the Trojans to call timeout. When play resumed the Chiefs continued to dominate the action and eventually secured a lopsided 25-8 victory. Waubonsee finished off the match by taking game three in convincing fashion 25-9.

Lape paced Waubonsee’s effort by recording seven kills, 18 assists and six serving aces. The sophomore from Newark entered the night tied for 17th nationally among all NJCAA Division II players with 59 serving aces. Alexandra Cox added seven kills and three solo blocks to increase her national leading total to 120 solo blocks on the season. Mallory Jones Mallory Jones collected nine kills, Payton Orzech registered 14 assists and Haley Koziol contributed 11 digs for Waubonsee.

Waubonsee is next in action when they travel to Kankakee to participate in tri-angular match with the Cavaliers and Lake Michigan (MI) College this coming Saturday, October 29. Waubonsee is set to begin Region IV Division II Tournament play on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The Chiefs will host a yet-to-be determined opponent in Erickson Hall beginning at 6:00 p.m. That match will be broadcast ‘live’ on-line at
