Chiefs edge nationally-ranked Morton in ISCC thriller

Conference: Yes

Opponent: Panthers at Chiefs
1 - 0 (W)

(Sugar Grove, IL.) - Waubonsee Community College’s Men’s Soccer team took the first step toward a potential Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) title. The Chiefs pulled out a thrilling 1-0 victory over visiting Morton College, which was ranked in the top-30 nationally in the NJCAA’s Division I Pre-season poll. The win moves Waubonsee into a first place tie with Prairie State College in the ISCC standings. The Chiefs and Pioneers are set to meet in Sugar Grove on Oct. 13 in the ISCC finale for both teams.

The Chiefs (3-0-1, 2-0) and Panthers (2-4, 1-1) engaged in a defensive battle throughout a scoreless first half. A Morton miscue led to the lone goal as Waubonsee’s Mario Rodriguez scored on a penalty kick, his sixth goal of the season, only three minutes into the second half. From that point on the tempo of the match quickened as both teams became more offensive minded. Waubonsee and Morton each had several prime scoring opportunities only to be denied each time. A pair of Chiefs’ shots even bounded off the post, just inches from getting past the Morton keeper. Meanwhile, the Panthers also had several potential game-tying shots thwarted by Waubonsee’s defense. Morton’s best opportunity to knot the score came with 12 minutes to go. Chiefs’ keeper Robert Marquez dove to his right to knock down a Morton shot on goal. However, Marquez was unable to corral the ball. He scrambled to his feet and again dove to barely deflect away a Panthers’ rebound shot to preserve the shutout.

Waubonsee is next in action this Saturday, September 10, when they travel to South Suburban College for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference match. The Chiefs next home game is not until Saturday, September 17, when they host Judson University’s Junior Varsity beginning at 1:00 p.m. Waubonsee returns to ISCC play on Tuesday, September 20 with a home match against Oakton Community College.
