Chiefs hold off Panthers, stay in the hunt for the ISCC crown

Waubonsee Community College’s women’s basketball team held off Morton College for a 62-57 win. The Chiefs looked sluggish at times, but never trailed the entire game in knocking off the Panthers for the second time this season. The victory keeps the Chiefs (15-11, 8-1) in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) race, just half a game behind leader Moraine Valley Community College (22-2, 8-0).

Behind 12 points by Taseandra Parker, the Chiefs led 21-15 at the end of the first quarter. Waubonsee then took its biggest lead of the game at 33-21 with three minutes remaining in the second quarter. However, the Chiefs just could not put the Panthers away. Trailing 33-24 at halftime, Morton then out scored Waubonsee 16-10 in the third period to pull within 43-40 entering the final stanza. In the fourth quarter the Chiefs never led by more than seven points, while the Panthers got within two points on a pair of occasions. However, both times Waubonsee’s Aynia McGowan quickly responded with a driving basket to give the Chiefs some breathing room.

Lauren Goff led all scorers with 26 points and three assists. The freshman from Sycamore connected on five three-point baskets, giving her 16 treys over Waubonsee’s last three games. Parker finished with a double-double netting 12 points and snagging 10 rebounds. McGowan tallied nine fourth quarter points en route to booking 11 points for the game. Mozelle Kempiak hauled down 17 rebounds, but scored only five points, breaking her string of 15 consecutive games with double digit points and rebounds. Morton’s Tyisha Worthy registered a double-double with 24 points and 16 boards to go along with six steals.

Waubonsee’s next game is a week from now on Thursday, February 16 when they travel to Palos Hills to battle Moraine Valley Community College. The women’s contest is set to begin at 5:15 p.m. with the men slated to tipoff at 7:15 p.m. The Chiefs’ return home for their final regular season home contest on Tuesday, February 21 when they host Oakton Community College at 5:15 p.m. Waubonsee’s men’s team is scheduled to tipoff afterwards beginning at 7:15 p.m. against the Owls in a potential showdown for the ISCC championship.
