Chiefs' pressure wears down Hawks as Waubonsee cruises to lopsided victory

Conference: No

Opponent: Hawks at Chiefs
106 - 77 (W)

(Sugar Grove, IL.) – It just seemed to be a matter of time before Waubonsee Community College’s pressure defense wore down visiting Harper College. The Chiefs’ depth and team quickness led to 28 Harper turnovers. Meanwhile, Waubonsee’s (3-2) balanced attack placed five players in double figures in scoring. It all added up to an eventual 106-77 Waubonsee victory over the Hawks in a Saturday afternoon contest.

Harper (1-7) jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Chiefs’ Alec Goetz nailed a pair of three-pointers to knot the score four minutes into the game. A pair of Steve Green free throws tied the score again at 15, midway through the first half. The Chiefs full-court pressure defense then started to pay dividends. A 16-2 run by Waubonsee over a three-minute span put the Chiefs in front 31-17. Waubonsee went to the locker room at halftime comfortably ahead 47-31, keyed by 15 Harper turnovers.

The Chiefs’ relentless pressure helped them extended their lead to 79-49 midway through the second period. Waubonsee then reached the century mark on a free throw by Xavier Martin with 2:49 remaining. The Hawks finished the game with 28 turnovers and shot 35 percent (24 of 68) from the floor. Waubonsee shot 52 percent (38 of 73) from the field and connected on 25 of 33 (76 percent) from the foul line.

Tyrone Carey netted 13 first half points en route to leading Waubonsee in scoring with 26 points. The sophomore guard made 10 of 16 shots and made all six attempts from the line, while also handing out five assists. Goetz added 22 points, grabbed six rebounds and made three steals. Deon Ward came off the bench to score 20 points. Germaine Roebuck chipped in with 12 points, five boards, three assists and three steals, and Dominick Martin contributed 11 points.

The Chiefs will be in action again next Tuesday when they host Aurora University’s Junior Varsity. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. in Waubonsee’s Erickson Hall Gymnasium. Waubonsee’s women’s team will play Highland Community College prior to that, starting at 5:00 p.m. Both games will be telecast locally ‘live’ on Waubonsee’s Educational Television cable channel and streamed on-line at
