In a year of extraordinary challenges, Waubonsee Community College answered the call to maintain a dynamic community where our students and employees can learn, work, and thrive. We explored the unknown together, and we carved new pathways forward. 

Next month, I will celebrate my 20th anniversary as President of Waubonsee Community College. I began writing a monthly column in July 2010, making this the end of the eleventh year of columns. Over these years it has been a way for me to share with the Waubonsee community and the community at large many of the great and exciting opportunities at the college and to celebrate the accomplishments of our students and employees.

May is a time of change and transition for many people. This is particularly true for high school and college graduates.

April is a special month for everyone associated with community colleges; it is Community College Month.

It’s hard to believe that Waubonsee’s Spring Break is just around the corner and that last year at this time we entered entirely unfamiliar ground, a global pandemic. One year later, I am so proud of the incredible resilience that Waubonsee students and employees have demonstrated during such a challenging year.

Black History Month got started as national Negro History week in 1926 created by Dr. Carter G. Woodson and sponsored by what is known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, also founded by Dr. Woodson. With the growing awareness of Black identity and the civil rights movement of the 1960s, many colleges expanded the event to Black History Month. Official recognition of this annual celebration began with President Gerald Ford in 1976 and every American president since then has designated February as Black History Month. This year, the theme is “Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity.”

January is the time that many of us strive to live up to New Year’s resolutions or make commitments to enhance our lives in a variety of ways. We have all been affected by the global pandemic in some way and the practice of physical distancing has highlighted the importance of our personal and professional connections. As a result, many of our resolutions and commitments may be focused on creating or renewing connections.

The end of the year is often a time of reflection for many.

Every year at this time, we are putting the finishing touches on the college’s Annual Report to the Community... 

The stories and information highlighted in the report share progress toward the goals of our Strategic Plan, provide fiscal year financial data, and most importantly celebrate individual and college successes. We hope that through these stories, we can help create and foster personal connections between you, our community members, and Waubonsee Community College, YOUR community college.
