To help you build your skills and be successful, Waubonsee places you into appropriate English and math courses based on your abilities. All new full-time students need to go through the course placement process. Part-time students only need to complete the process if enrolling in an English or math course.
Course placement is based on one of six criteria:
ACT and SAT Scores
If you have taken the ACT in the past 60 months, your scores can be used to determine your course placement at Waubonsee. ACT scores needed to place into college-level English or math courses are as follows:
- ACT English score 20 or higher
- ACT Reading score 20 or higher
- ACT Math score 22 or higher
New SAT Scores (if taken after 3/2016)
If you have taken the SAT after 3/2016, your scores can be used to determine your course placement at Waubonsee. SAT scores needed to place into college-level English, reading, or math courses are as follows:
- SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 540 or higher (English and reading placement)
- SAT Math score of 550 or higher
Prior to registering, you may bring a copy of your ACT or SAT score report to Admissions and be issued a temporary "permit" to enroll in the eligible English, reading, or math course for which you are eligible. Official documentation of your ACT or SAT scores must be received by Registration and Records before the first day of class or you will be administratively withdrawn from the course. Visit the ACT website or SAT website for further information on requesting test scores. Test scores must be valid at the time of registration. Alternately, some high school transcripts include ACT or SAT scores. If so, you may request that your high school send us an official transcript.
PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers)
If you have taken the PARCC exam in the 11th or 12th grade, your scores can be used to determine your course placement at Waubonsee. PARCC scores needed to place into college-level English or math courses are as follows:
- PARCC English language arts/literacy score of 4 or 5 and PARCC Mathematics score of 4 or 5
Placement Testing at Waubonsee
Testing is available on a walk-in basis, space permitting, at the Sugar Grove, Aurora Downtown, Aurora Fox Valley, and Plano locations of the Learning Assessment and Testing Services center. Learn more about placement testing at Waubonsee.
Placement Testing at Another College
If you have completed placement testing at another college or university and your scores are still valid, you may request a review of your testing for placement purposes at Waubonsee. Submit a request for an Alternate Placement Testing Review (pdf), an official copy of your test results, and contact information for the prior college or university to the Learning Assessment and Testing Services Coordinator.
If you have successfully completed college-level coursework in the areas of math and/or English, schedule an appointment with the Counseling, Advising and Transfer Center for transcript evaluation. Official transcripts must be received by Registration and Records before the first day of class or you will be administratively withdrawn from the course.
