Literacy is important, no matter what your background is and what your goals are. Literacy empowers adults to be responsible citizens and parents. Research continues to show that children of functionally illiterate adults share the legacy of their parents’ educational, economic and social limitations. Improving skills in conversation, reading, writing and math means better-educated parents, which leads to better-educated children.

To strengthen literacy in our community, Waubonsee trains and places volunteers to provide English language tutoring to adults who want to improve their reading, writing and math skills, or learn English. Volunteer tutors work with students on an individual basis, or assist classroom instructors in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes.

Adult Literacy
Waubonsee has offered family literacy opportunities to residents in Illinois Community College District #516 (pdf) since 1989. Partnerships with local schools offer the four components of family literacy programming. These include adult education classes, parenting classes, parent and child time together, and early childhood education. Trained literacy volunteer tutors assist at these locations.

Conversation Groups
English conversation and supporting activities are offered in a small group setting for adults wanting to improve their spoken English language skills. Daytime, evening and weekend groups are available. These are free drop-in groups which do not require enrollment.

Writing Group
A writing group is available to adults learning the English language. Basic writing skills, practice time and feedback are provided by a trained volunteer. This is a free group with open enrollment.
