A volunteer tutor helps an adult to speak, read or write English. A volunteer tutor works in either a classroom or one-to-one with a student. Volunteers who tutor one-to-one with a student tailor the session to meet the needs of the student, and monitor progress. Those who volunteer in the classroom assist the teacher with small group exercises and helping students who are falling behind.
The program is funded by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy. Grant funding guidelines require 15 hours of training. Interested volunteers must attend a training session or complete training on-line. Training sessions are held at the Aurora campus six times each year with both day and evening sessions offered. The tutor/trainer coordinator facilitates the trainings.
For more information or to register for training, please call (630) 801-7900, ext. 4107.
Volunteers are encouraged to view questions and answers prior to choosing a training session. Those who are ready to enroll in the next training can print and complete the volunteer application and background check form and mail to:
