Adult Literacy

The Adult Literacy Volunteer Project at Waubonsee trains and places volunteers to provide English language tutoring to adults who want to improve their reading and writing skills or learn English.  Volunteer tutors instruct on an individual basis or assist classroom instructors in adult basic education (ABE), General Education Development (GED), and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. The mission of the Adult Literacy Project is to empower adults to be responsible citizens and parents through the process of improved literacy skills.  Family literacy, conversation groups and a writing group are offered.  The program is an accredited ProLiteracy WorldWide affiliate.

Family Literacy

Research continues to show that children of functionally illiterate adults share the legacy of their parents’ educational, economic and social limitations.  Better educated parents produce better educated children.  The Adult Literacy Project has offered family literacy to residents in District #516 since 1989.  Partnerships with local schools offer the four components of family literacy programming.  These include adult education classes. Parenting classes, parent and child time together and early childhood education.  Trained literacy volunteer tutors assist at these locations.

Conversation Groups

English conversation and group activities are offered in a small group setting for adults  wanting to improve their spoken English language skills.  Daytime, evening and weekend classes are available. This is a drop in, open enrollment, and free class.

Writing Group
A writing group is available to adults learning the English language. Basic writing skills, practice time and feedback are provided by a trained volunteer. This is a drop in, open enrollment, and free class.
