Waubonsee's Intensive English Institute (IEI) provides concentrated language instruction for English as a Second Language students to develop the skills necessary for success in an academic, professional, employment or community setting. IEI courses focus on reading and vocabulary, writing and grammar, listening and speaking, and pronunciation. This full-time program gives students the opportunity to rapidly improve spoken and written English and gain valuable cultural knowledge.
The Intensive English Institute offers four levels of classes from beginning to advanced, and students receive 18 hours of instruction each week. Classes meet Monday through Thursday mornings from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Classes are small to maximize student/teacher contact, and instruction is enhanced through audio and video activities in the Language Laboratory. Experienced ESL faculty help students develop English language skills with close attention to individual learning needs.
Before enrolling in the program, students must take an assessment test to ensure proper placement. Students also participate in an orientation before classes begin to aid them in registration, answer program questions, and ensure they are familiar with the campus resources.
Upon successful completion of the IEI program, students participate in a Recognition Ceremony and receive a certificate of achievement.
Advising is available on a walk-in basis to assist students who complete the IEI program with career exploration, academic options, and class scheduling as they transition to further coursework.
