Digital Counters
Visitors to this page

Digital counters are graphic displays of the number of people who have visited a web page. Counters can be annoying if used for grandstanding or self-indulgence. However, they can be useful to users who want to get a sense of how many other people are interested in the content of the page. Page authors may also find them useful to track the traffic to their page.

There are a few ways to include a counter on a web page. The first method is to program the counter yourself. This is done by computer programmers who have access to the Common Gateway Interface (CGI) program area of the web server.

The second way is to use a web authoring editor which contains a way to easily include a digital counter. Consult your manual or online help if you are using such an editor.

A third method is to use an online counter service. (This is the recommended method for students, faculty, and staff using Waubonsee's server.) The counter on the top of this page is a free counter provided by http://www.digits.com. This popular service walks you through the setup process and tells you exactly what HTML code to use to increment your counter. Note: When you use an online counter service, the images that make up the counter display must be transfered from the service. This could delay page loading. Don't put a counter on every page that you create. Usually a counter on the home page is sufficient.
