Officer Authority, Traffic Control, and Safety Tips
Campus Police Department Authority
Campus Police Officers have the authority to enforce state laws and college regulations, including the power to apprehend and arrest anyone involved in illegal acts on campus or areas adjacent to the campus. Campuses located in other municipal jurisdictions receive law enforcement services through the local police department. Campus Police cooperates fully with local law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute crimes occurring on campus. Additionally, Campus Police reports and assists in investigation of possible violations of the Code of Student Conduct to the Student Conduct Board or Human Resources Department for administrative review and action.
Vehicle Safety and Citations
All "Rules of the Road" apply to all persons operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle on our campuses. Drive and park according to posted signs. Campus citations are issued for violations of traffic regulations. If the violation is serious, a Waubonsee police officer may issue a state citation. Any person receiving a campus citation may request a hearing with the Campus Police Chief, first floor of Dickson Center. Appeals of the decision of the Police Chief may be directed to the college's general counsel. State citations are not subject to appeal, but are adjudicated in Kane County Circuit Court. Fines for campus citations may be paid in person at the Bursar's Office, located on the second floor of the Student Center, by mail, or on-line. Please allow three (3) business days for citations to be processed before paying. Grades and records may be withheld if fines are left unpaid.
Safety Tips
- Do not walk alone. Walk with a friend or a Campus Police escort at (630) 466-2552 or (ext. 2552 from a Sugar Grove Campus phone) or stay near a group of people.
- Park and walk in well lit areas.
- Walk at a steady pace and make brief eye contact with the people around you. This shows confidence, which acts as a deterrent to attackers.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Familiarize yourself with the locations of hallway telephones and emergency call boxes.
- If you are ever being followed by a vehicle when you are walking, quickly turn around and walk in the opposite direction.
- When returning to your car, be alert to anyone under or around your car and look inside before getting in.
- Trust your intuition and act on it. If you see someone or something suspicious, call Campus Police at (630) 466-2552 (ext. 2552 from a Sugar Grove Campus phone) or (630) 906-4142 (ext. 4142 from an Aurora Campus phone) or by using an emergency call box.
- If you have a concern, question or suggestion regarding campus safety, visit Campus Police on the first floor of Dickson Center, or call ext. 2552 from a campus phone or (630) 466-2552.
