  STUDENT GOVERNMENT

Student government provides the opportunity for a student-planned and operated system of creative projects. It provides one channel of communication through which the administration of the college and students may discuss academic topics. All student government activities and elections are governed by a constitution approved by vote of the student body.

Student Senate
The senate is composed of 12 students. The senate president and five senators are elected in the spring while the remaining six senators are elected in the fall. The senate has open meetings and all students are invited to attend. Students are encouraged to share their ideas, problems and suggestions by using senate mailboxes in the Student Activities office, STC 126.

Student Trustee
A student member of the Waubonsee Board of Trustees is elected during the spring election. This student attends all board of trustees meetings, representing the interests of Waubonsee students. The student trustee has a mailbox in STC 126 and can be contacted through the Student Activities office.

African Cultural Alliance (ACA)

ACA is dedicated to increasing the awareness of African American culture and its contributions to U.S. history.

Alpha Beta Gamma (lota Nu Chapter)
Alpha Beta Gamma is an international honor society for two-year colleges. Its focus is to recognize and encourage scholarship among students who are majoring in business related programs. There is a one-time membership fee.

Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society/Organization
of Adult Students for Interaction and Support (OASIS) These two organizations have merged activities in order to provide a positive influence for non-traditional students (25 or older) as they transition to academic life. Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society has a GPA requirement and one-time membership fee. Invitations are issued to all eligible students at the end of the fall and spring semesters.

Waubonsee Amateur Radio Club
The group promotes interest in amateur radio communications and experimentation, as well as providing a forum for persons interested in radio technique. Ham radio is an important means of communications during disasters. This Waubonsee organization has its own radio call sign. No experience required — just interest.

American Sign Language - Deaf Connection
The organization’s purpose is to increase members’ signing and communication skills while developing leadership and personal growth. It also hopes to build rapport with the Deaf community and increase awareness of both interpreting and Deaf culture.

Art Club
Art Club provides students with opportunities to creatively express themselves and to take part in artistic cultural experiences.

Association for Creative Expression (ACE)
The Association for Creative Expression (ACE) is Waubonsee's creative writing group. They typically meet every two weeks to share and workshop writing together. Creative writers in all genres — from poetry, fiction, non-fiction, drama, lyrics and all other types of writing — are  welcome to this group. We are friendly and committed to improving each other's writing. ACE is also the feeder group from which editors and volunteers to Horizons, Waubonsee's literary magazine, are taken. If you are interested in joining the group to share your work or getting more involved in Waubonsee's literary scene, please e-mail the advisors for more information.

Business Club provides members with opportunities to gain a better understanding of the business world and provide service to the community.

The ceramics group provides activities and trips to expand student knowledge of the field.

The organization promotes education and creates an atmosphere to discuss issues in the field of criminal justice and law enforcement.

National Adult Education Honor Society
The group’s mission is to provide recognition to adult education students. Eligible Waubonsee students are enrolled in ESL, ABE or GED programs. Membership is by faculty nomination. One-time fee required.

National Technical Honor Society
NTHS encourages scholastic excellence in applied science majors or certificate students. Chapters exist at both the high school and college levels. Minimum GPA requirement and one-time membership fee required. Students with high school membership may apply immediately for chapter membership at a reduced fee of $10.

Spectrum

College Bowl

This “varsity sport of the mind” is a team question and answer game of general knowledge and quick recall. There are usually tournaments in the fall and spring. Contact the coaches about tournaments and try-outs.

Ethics Bowl
Each fall teams of four students compete to provide the best responses to ethical cases. Responses are judged by a panel of up to seven community members. First and second place teams receive awards.

Model Illinois Government (MIG)
Each spring the Waubonsee delegation trains for the annual statewide simulation of the Illinois General Assembly, learning about the legislative process, lobbying tactics and parliamentary procedure. Yearly fee required to participate.

SkillsUSA
SkillsUSA is a national organization. It serves students preparing for careers in vocational/technical fields. The organization hosts regional, state and national competitions giving students opportunities to demonstrate their skills. Waubonsee students compete in automotive service technology; auto body repair; early childhood education; and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). Yearly membership fee required. Competitions may require some student financial contribution.

Athletics
The Waubonsee Chiefs participate in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference, and the college is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Men compete in cross-country, golf, basketball, wrestling, tennis, baseball and soccer. Women compete in cross-country, volleyball, tennis, basketball, soccer and softball. Intramurals provides recreational activities for those not wishing to compete in an intercollegiate sport. For more information, contact the Athletics Department at ext. 2524.
