Waubonsee Offers Day Trips to Laughter, Learning, The Fiddler
Want to get away for a day of fun this spring?
Waubonsee Community College's Community Education Department will offer a series of day trips this spring for those interested in some fun and enrichment.
All trips include transportation, admission to the event, taxes and lunch.
- On Wednesday, March 19, Waubonsee will take those seeking some good Irish-themed laughs and entertainment to Starved Rock Lodge & Conference Center at Starved Rock State Park near Utica for Shamrocks & Shenanigans. The Gilhoolys will entertain with Irish wit, singing and dancing in a fun St. Patrick's Day celebration, complete with a lunch buffet featuring traditional Irish and American food, including corned beef and cabbage, Irish coffee and Irish dessert.
Transportation will depart Waubonsee's Sugar Grove Campus at 10 a.m. on March 19, returning at 4:30 p.m. Cost for this package is $89 per person.
- On Wednesday, April 9, a day of science and technology await participants in Waubonsee's day trip to Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont. Participants will be invited to tour the lab, with an emphasis on Argonne's Advanced Photon Source (APS), which provides the brightest storage ring-generated X-ray beams for scientific research in the U.S. and the Western Hemisphere.
The X-rays generated by the APS allow scientists to study the structure and function of materials from the center of the Earth to outer space, and all points in between, according to the description on Argonne's website.
The Argonne trip will also include lunch at Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket on Historic Route 66 in Willowbrook, and a stop at the DuPage Regional Airport in West Chicago, with opportunities to take in a behind-the-scenes look at airport operations.
The Argonne trip will depart Waubonsee's Sugar Grove Campus at 8:30 a.m. on April 9, returning at 4:30 p.m. Cost for the Argonne trip is $79 per person.
- On Wednesday, May 7, join Waubonsee on a trip to Fort Atkinson, Wis., for a lunchtime matinee performance of Fireside Theater's Fiddler on the Roof. The classic musical, which opened on Broadway the same year Fireside opened its doors 50 years ago, held the title as Broadway's longest running show for more than 20 years, winning nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The musical tells the tale of Teyve, a long-suffering dairyman who struggles to find balance between his traditions and his family.
The performance will include the Fireside's "Featured Menu" for lunch.
The trip will depart Waubonsee's Sugar Grove Campus at 8:30 a.m. on May 7, returning at 6:30 p.m. Cost for the trip is $99 per person.
Waubonsee Community College has been organizing trips and tours like these for more than 25 years, and looks forward to continuing that tradition again this spring.
