Lady Chiefs pull off upset of Pioneers, make amends for previous 39-point loss to Prairie State

Conference: Yes

Opponent: Prairie State College
55 - 44 (W)

In one of the biggest turn arounds in Waubonsee history, the Lady Chiefs upset Prairie State College 55-44 in Erickson Hall. Waubonsee (12-12, 6-3) fell to the Pioneers by 39 points (71-32) on Jan. 10 in Chicago Heights. The 50-point reversal by the Lady Chiefs stunned the Pioneers (20-5, 7-2) and knocked them out of a first-place tie with Elgin in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference standings. The win moves Waubonsee into at least a share of third place in the league standings and is the Lady Chiefs' fifth consecutive victory.

Waubonsee led at halftime 19-18 as neither team could get on track offensively. The Pioneers eventually took their biggest lead of the game at 41-34 with six minutes remaining, and appeared poised to run away with the victory. However, the Lady Chiefs ran off 15 straight points over the next three and a half minutes to grab a 49-41 lead. Back-to-back three point baskets by Karla Vietinghoff, and another by Maxzine Rossler in a span of 59 seconds highlighted Waubonsee's rally. The Lady Chiefs closed out the game on a 21-3 run over the final six minutes of action.

Vietinghoff finished the game with a double-double, booking 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Colleen Purcell added 16 points, Samantha Alvis dished out seven assists, Leslie Gonzalez snagged six rebounds, and Rossler chipped in with nine points, six boards, five assists and four steals.
