Cavaliers' big second quarter sends Chiefs to defeat

Waubonsee Community College’s women’s basketball team played evenly with highly touted Kankakee Community College for the first quarter. Then the Chiefs fell apart in the second quarter allowing the Cavaliers to springboard to an 87-63 win. The teams were deadlocked at 21 after 10 minutes of play. However, Kankakee out scored Waubonsee 31-11 in second period as the Chiefs committed 19 first half turnovers. For the game the Cavaliers (17-6) booked 28 points off of Waubonsee (14-11) turnovers.

Alexis VanWyhe led Waubonsee with 16 points and seven rebounds. Mozelle Kempiak posted another double-double, her 19th of the season, grabbing 18 rebounds and netting 13 points to go along with three assists, three steals and three blocks. Kandace Jones came off the bench to tally 13 points and snag six boards. Kayla Battle hauled down nine rebounds, Dajashina Clark dished out three assists and Hayley Farren chipped in with eight points. Kankakee’s Jasmine Elliott led all scorers with 31 points, while also grabbing 15 boards.

Waubonsee’s next home game is Thursday, Feb. 15, when they host the College of Lake County in Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference action. Coach Williams’ women’s team tips off at 5:15 p.m. against the Lancers, while Coach Dave Heiss’ men’s team is set to square off at 7:15 p.m. (CDT).
