Chiefs pull away in third quarter to down Panthers in ISCC action

Waubonsee Community College’s women’s basketball team pulled away in the third quarter and went on to complete a 72-60 victory over visiting Morton College. The win moved the Chiefs’ record over the .500 mark at 9-8.  Waubonsee improved to 2-1 in Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference play.

Morton led 19-16 after one quarter of play before the teams went into the locker room at halftime deadlocked at 31-all. The Chiefs then found their offensive groove in the third quarter, erupting for 29 points in the period. A 16-5 run late in the quarter put Waubonsee in front by 15 points before they closed out the period with a 60-47 lead. Waubonsee then held off the Panthers in the fourth quarter to secure their second conference win.

Mozelle Kempiak led the Chiefs with 18 points and seven rebounds. Kandace Jones chipped in with 14 points off the bench, while Alexis VanWhye provided Waubonsee with a third player in double digits with 10 points. Kayla Battle helped lead Waubonsee to a 44-40 rebounding advantage by snagging 11 boards. Emily Uplegger recorded five steals, Dajashina Clark handed out four assists and Lauren Goff made four steals in the victory.

Waubonsee’s next game is this Saturday, January 20, 2018 when they travel to Wauwatosa, Wisconsin for the first time ever to take on Bryant & Stratton College. The Chiefs are set to play three more consecutive road games next week. Waubonsee returns home to Erickson Hall on Tuesday, January 30, when they host Oakton Community College. Coach Williams’ women’s team tips off at 5:15 p.m. against the Owls, while Coach Dave Heiss’ men’s team is set to square off at 7:15 p.m. (CDT).
