Chiefs pull away in second quarter to secure win over Sandburg

(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Waubonsee Community College’s women’s basketball team pulled away in the second quarter on their way to a 67-37 win over Carl Sandburg College in a rare Friday evening contest for both teams. Waubonsee led just 17-11 at the end of the first quarter, then broke the game open in the second quarter by out scoring the visitors 27-7.

The Chiefs (2-4) out scored the Chargers 22-6 in the paint through the first two periods. Alexis VanWhye tallied 11 first half points and Hayley Farren added 10 to help stake the Chiefs to a 44-18 lead at the break. Waubonsee also grabbed an 11-3 rebound advantage off the offensive glass and a 27-11 edge in rebounding overall as Mo Kempiak snagged 10 boards by halftime.

Farren finished with 18 points and seven rebounds to lead the Chiefs offense. Kempiak posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 boards, to go along with handing out four assists and making four steals. Point guard Lauren Goff dished out nine assists, snagged eight rebounds and registered three steals, while VanWhye ended the game with 12 points. Waubonsee finished the game with a 48-29 rebounding advantage. The Chiefs held the Chargers (1-3) to just 27 percent shooting (15 of 55) from the floor, while Waubonsee shot 42 percent (26 of 62) for the game.

Waubonsee hosts Black Hawk College tomorrow afternoon in a 1:00 p.m. contest. The Chiefs go on the road next Tuesday, November 21, when they travel to Highland Community College in Freeport. The Chiefs and Cougars are set to tipoff at 5:00 p.m. (CDT).
