65 - 59 (W)

Waubonsee Community College’s women’s basketball team held off visiting Triton College to secure a 65-59 victory in their 2017-18 season home opener. The Chiefs’ (1-2) first win of the season was also the first career victory for new head coach Jim Williams. Sophomore forward Alexis VanWhye led the way with 24 points, scoring in a variety of ways throughout the game.

Both teams started out cold, missing a combined nine shots over a scoreless initial two minutes of play. Waubonsee eventually grabbed a 15-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and went to the locker room at halftime ahead just 35-33. The Chiefs’ first half offense was bolstered by the shooting of newcomer Emily Uplegger. The freshman nailed three shots from beyond the arc on her way to booking 11 first half points. Meanwhile, Triton’s Mariah Harvey nearly single-handedly kept the Lady Trojans in the contest as she tallied 17 first half points.

However, Waubonsee began the third quarter with a 7-0 run to take the upper hand 42-33 midway through the period. A pair of free throws by Harvey in the closing seconds pulled the Trojans to within five points (48-43) at the end of three quarters. The Chiefs then kept Triton at bay the rest of the way as the visitors never got closer than five points. A driving lay-in by VanWhye staked Waubonsee to its biggest lead of the game at 57-47 with six minutes remaining. The Chiefs made seven free throws in the final four minutes to hang on for the win.

To go along with her team-leading 24 points, VanWhye also handed out three assists, grabbed five rebounds and made a pair of steals. Uplegger finished with 16 points, while Mo Kempiak registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Hayley Farren contributed eight points, hauled down nine rebounds and dished out five assists, while Lauren Goff chipped in with seven assists and eight rebounds.

Waubonsee’s next game is this coming Thursday, November 9, when they host Illinois Valley Community College starting at 5:30 p.m. Coach Dave Heiss’ men’s squad tips off against Northwestern University’s Club team immediately afterwards at 7:30 p.m. in their season opener.
