74 - 62 (W)

(Sugar Grove, IL.) –  Waubonsee Community College’s men’s basketball team finished the first half of the season on a high note with a hard fought 74-62 victory over visiting Wright College from Chicago.  The Chiefs pulled away down the stretch to head into the holiday break with a 7-5 record overall.

Waubonsee trailed most of the game, struggling offensively in the early going. Wright led 16-6 midway through the first half before the Chiefs’ offense got on track. The teams went to the locker room at the break with Wright leading by just four points 30-26. The Rams then led 43-35 seven minutes into the second half when the Chiefs’ finally began to click on offense, sparked by reserve guard Jovante Slater. Three straight treys by Slater staked the Chiefs to a 46-44 lead with 11 minutes left. Wright went back in front as the teams traded baskets until Waubonsee took the lead for good on a lay-in by Deland “DJ” Deere at 55-54. Waubonsee reeled off a 15-2 run to grab a 66-56 lead with 3:30 to go and held off the Rams down the stretch.

Darnell Wright turned in a monster game for the Chiefs booking 25 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. The 6’5 sophomore made 10 of 12 shots from the floor, handed out three assists, made two steals and blocked a shot. Deere finished with 13 points, Kevin Jackson added 12 points and hauled down six boards, Slater added 11 points, and Addison Bode dished out six assists in the victory. Waubonsee went 19 of 22 (86 percent) from the foul line, and the Chiefs’ bench out scored the Ram’s reserves 39-2.

Waubonsee’s next game is not until January 4, 2018 when they host Aurora University’s Junior Varsity starting at 7:00 p.m. At halftime of that game Waubonsee will be honoring former and current student-athletes’ success in the classroom during the 2016-17 school year. The Chiefs then travel to Crystal Lake on January 9 to take on McHenry County College in their Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference opener. Waubonsee returns home on January 16 when they host Prairie State College. Coach Jim Williams’ women’s team tips off at 5:15 p.m. against the Pioneers, while Coach Dave Heiss’ men’s team is set to square off at 7:15 p.m. (CDT). Both games can been seen ‘live’ on-line at or locally on cable television. Check with your local cable provider for the channel in your area.
