89 - 86 (W)

(Aurora, IL.) – Waubonsee Community College’s men’s basketball team picked up its second win of the season by holding on for an 89-86 victory over the Aurora University Junior Varsity. The Chiefs (2-3) grabbed a 44-34 halftime lead on Aurora’s James Lancaster Court primarily on the strength of 6’9 center Jake Pike’s 11 points. In the second half guard Deland Deere and forward Darnell Wright took over for Waubonsee as the Chiefs overcame a three-point barrage by the Spartans, who stayed within striking distance the entire game.

The Chiefs still held a double-digit lead with six minutes remaining. However, the Spartans went on a 13-2 run over the next two minutes to pull within a point at 75-74. Waubonsee responded, scoring a couple transition baskets on the way to building their lead back up to 83-76 with four minutes to go. Trailing 85-81 with two minutes to go Aurora scored inside to pull within two with 0:51 left. Deere then nailed two free throws after an Aurora foul to put the Chiefs ahead 87-83. Once again a long three-pointer by the Spartans got them within a point with 0:29 to go as Garrett Hoffman tallied his fifth trey of the contest.

Aurora then fouled again and Pike missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw situation. The Spartans grabbed the rebound and called timeout with 0:23 remaining to plan a final potential go ahead shot. However, Hoffman’s eight-foot, running one-hander from the right side was off the mark. Deere grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 0:04.7 left. The sophomore then also missed the front end of a one-and-one scenario, but Wright snuck in and grab the offensive rebound and was fouled with 0:03.2 remaining. The 6’5” sophomore then secured the victory by making both ensuing free throws. The Spartans called time out to set up a potential game-tying shot, but the Chiefs’ defense was up to the challenge and Rashad Johnson’s half-court heave came up well short of the rim as the buzzer sounded.

Wright finished with 20 points to lead Waubonsee in scoring, nailing all six of his free throw attempts.  The 5’8” Deere added 19 points, including a pair of three-point baskets. Pike ended the game with 15 points, while Jacob Niesman registered three steals, Kevin Jackson chipped in with nine points and Addison Bode booked eight points in the victory. Waubonsee finished the game 17 of 24 (71 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Spartans made eight of 12 (67 percent) foul shots. Aurora had a 16-6 advantage in three-point baskets, but made just 15 two-point field goals for the game. Johnson led all scorers with 22 points, including five baskets from beyond the arc. Jacob Buchner added 18 points, and Hoffman finished with 15 points.

The Chiefs go on the road next Tuesday, November 28, when they travel to Dixon to take on Sauk Valley Community College. The Chiefs and Skyhawks are set to tipoff at 7:30 p.m. (CDT).
