Waubonsee Community College’s volleyball team advanced to the Region IV Division II Tournament Semi-Finals with a convincing win over visiting Morton College. The second-seeded Chiefs dispatched the seventh-seeded Panthers 25-14, 25-12 and 25-17 in just 53 minutes for their sixth straight victory. Waubonsee (26-16) will play this coming Saturday, November 5 against the winner between Illinois Valley Community College and Kankakee Community College. That match will begin at 12:30p.m. at the College of Lake County in north suburban Grayslake, the site of all the remaining games in the tournament.

In game one Waubonsee reeled off six of the first seven points to take control of the match early on. Game two started out in a similar fashion as the Chiefs tallied six of the first eight points. The Panthers (15-15-1) regrouped and got within 11-9 before Waubonsee’s began utilizing its superior size. With 6’0” Alexandra Cox and 6’1” Rachel Kelly up front, the Chiefs surged ahead 17-10 prompting a timeout by Morton. The break in the action did not help the Panthers as Waubonsee went on to score eight of the next 10 points to take game two. In the third set Waubonsee gradually pulled away to complete the sweep, ending the match on a serving ace by Mallory Jones.

Duffy and Haley Koziol each scored a dozen kills to lead the way for Waubonsee.  Jones registered five aces and had a dozen digs, while Cox added to her national leading solo block total with three more. The sophomore from St. Charles North High School leads all NJCAA Division II players in solo blocks with 130 on the season. Hollie Fedderly booked 22 assists, and Payton Orzech added 14 assists in the Chiefs final home match of 2016.
