Waubonsee sweeps Oakton in ISCC opener

(Sugar Grove, IL.) - Waubonsee Community College’s volleyball team kept their unblemished record intact with a convincing win over Oakton Community College in their Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference opener. The Chiefs improved to 4-0 overall on the season by dominating the visiting Owls (0-1, 0-1) in three straight games. Waubonsee led just 6-4 in the early going before reeling off 19 of the next 25 points on the way to taking game one 25-10. Game two was a similar affair as Waubonsee pulled away for a 25-11 victory. The Chiefs kept that momentum rolling in the third game by taking a commanding 11-4 lead. After an Oakton timeout, Waubonsee scored three of the next four points highlighted by a pair of serving aces by Brittany Grider. The Chiefs then kept Oakton at bay the rest of the way as they grabbed a 25-15 win to clinch the match.
Rachel Lape paced Waubonsee’s balanced attack with 11 assists, five kills and four aces. Alexandra Cox recorded six kills and had three blocks, while Haley Koziol also registered six kills. Hollie Fedderly added 10 assists, Vanessa Melendez contributed 12 digs, and Payton Orzech and Chelsey Ellen each booked five kills.
Waubonsee (4-0, 1-0) is next in action this weekend when they travel to Ohio to compete in the Owens Community College Invitational. The Chiefs return home next Tuesday, September 6 when they host Aurora University’s Junior Varsity.
