Waubonsee Community College’s volleyball team opened the 2016 season with a convincing victory over visiting Kankakee Community College. After a slow start the Chiefs rallied to take the first set 25-14. Waubonsee kept the pressure on to take an early lead in the second set, eventually grabbing a 25-17 victory. The Chiefs then appeared well on their way to completing the straight set triumph by wearing down the Cavaliers early in the third set. Waubonsee built a big lead right from the beginning and was seemingly in complete control with a 21-11 lead. However, Kankakee (0-1) ran off six consecutive points to climb back within four points at 21-17. The Cavaliers surged ahead 24-23 before a see-saw affair ensued. Each team had chances to win the set as they traded points back and forth. Waubonsee’s Alexandra Cox finally put an end to things with a game-winning kill to give the Chiefs a hard fought 28-26 win.
Freshman Chelsey Ellen paced Waubonsee’s attack with 12 kills. Cox and Mallory Jones each contributed seven kills, while Brittany Grider registered 13 digs. Rachel Duffy added three blocks and 14 assists, and Hollie Fedderly booked 18 assists in a winning cause. Waubonsee (1-0) is next in action this weekend when they travel south to compete in a Tri-match with Lincoln College and Joliet Junior College. The Chiefs return home next Tuesday, August 30 when they open Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference play against the Oakton Community College Owls. The match is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. CDT and can been seen ‘live’ on-line at www.Waubonsee.edu/athletics.
