Region IV Tournament (Quarterfinals)
Waubonsee breaks through in the second half to knock off 7th-seeded South Suburban
Opponent: #7 seed South Suburban College (3-8)
3 - 0 (W)
(Sugar Grove, IL.) - Waubonsee Community College’s Women’s Soccer team took a little while to get things going. The second-seeded Chiefs eventually broke through and knocked off seventh-seeded South Suburban College 3-0 in their Region IV Tournament Quarterfinal match. Waubonsee will now host the winner between third-seeded Oakton Community College and sixth-seeded College of Lake County in a semi-final match this coming Tuesday, November 1, at 2:30 p.m.
In the first half South Suburban (3-9) packed eight players in the box in an attempt to keep Waubonsee’s offensive attack in check. After a scoreless first half Waubonsee (11-5-2) finally broke through just 15 minutes after the intermission when sophomore Hannah Pealstrom drilled a shot from the left side past the Bulldogs’ keeper for her 18th goal of the season. Kayley Garland then tallied a pair of goals, numbers 16 and 17 of the year, midway through the period to put the game out of reach. Ayslin Nachman, Gianna Lopez and Nicole Koczka each registered an assist in the victory. Ashlyn Turner, who was recently selected as the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference and Region IV Goalkeeper of the Year, recorded her 10th shutout of the season in net for Waubonsee. Turner is tied for second among all NJCAA Division I keepers in shutouts, and is one shy of Waubonsee’s record of 11 set by Alanna Russo in 2008.
