Chiefs hold off Bryant & Stratton to win first ever meeting

Conference: No

Opponent: Bobcats at Chiefs
75 - 62 (W)

In the first ever meeting between the two schools, Waubonsee Community College ’s women’s basketball squad held off visiting Bryant & Stratton (WI.) College for a 75-62 win. The Lady Bobcats, in their inaugural season, just could not catch up to the Chiefs all afternoon. Perhaps the Lady Bobcats, possibly the most well traveled junior college team in the country this season, were road weary. By seasons’ end Bryant & Stratton is set to cover approximately 6,875 miles through Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Michigan over 18 road trips.

The game featured only three ties and three lead changes, all early in the first quarter. The Chiefs (6-8) gradually built a 22-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. Waubonsee then increased that advantage to 13 points (41-28) at halftime with a balanced attack. Six different Chiefs booked five points or more by the break with Mozelle Kempiak leading all scorers with 10 points. The Lady Bobcats (6-7) then out rebounded Waubonsee in the third quarter to help them pull within nine (54-45) at the end of the third period. Bryant and Stratton stayed in striking distance, but the Chiefs responded each time. Lauren Goff’s three-pointer with two minutes remaining put Waubonsee back in front by double digits (71-61) and signaled the beginning of the end for Bryant & Stratton.

Kempiak finished with a double-double netting 26 points and hauling down 16 rebounds to lead the way. Goff handed out nine assists and booked a dozen points, while Aynia McGowan added 11 points and dished out four assists. Alexis VanWyhe chipped in with 11 points, Taseandra Parker tallied nine points and grabbed seven boards, and Nay Nay Clark registered three assists and two steals.

The Chiefs next game will be this coming Tuesday, December 20 when they travel to Chicago to play Wright College and close out the first half of the season. Tipoff is slated for 5:00 p.m., with the men’s contest between the Chiefs and Rams to follow at 7:00 p.m.
