Waubonsee pulls away late to knock off Spartans' Junior Varsity

(Sugar Grove, IL.) – A 9-0 run by Waubonsee Community College midway through the fourth quarter propelled the Chiefs to a 64-52 over Aurora University’s Junior Varsity. Waubonsee (4-7) scored 23 points off of 30 turnovers by the Spartans which made all the difference.

The Chiefs led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter before the teams headed to their locker rooms at the half tied 29-all when Lauren Goff banked in a short jump shot at the buzzer. Waubonsee pulled ahead 42-35 heading into the final period and built the lead to double-digits (48-38) with 7:04 remaining. A minute and a half later Aurora had suddenly cut the deficit to four points, prompting Waubonsee head coach Jim Sury to call a timeout. Sparked by four steals, the Chiefs then proceeded to score the game’s next nine points and never looked back.  

Goff led Waubonsee with 20 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Mozelle Kempiak posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards to go along with five steals. Taseandra Parker chipped in with 10 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Dajashina Clark added nine points off the bench, and Alexis VanWyhe tallied eight points and grabbed six boards.   

The Chiefs will next be in action this Thursday, December 8 when they travel to Glen Ellyn to play the College of DuPage beginning at 5:00 p.m. The men’s contest between the Chiefs and Chaparrals will follow at 7:00 p.m. Waubonsee’s women are also on the road December 15 when they play at Rock Valley College with a tipoff at 5:30 p.m. The Chiefs return home on Saturday, December 17 when they play Bryant-Stratton College from Wisconsin for the first time ever. Tipoff is set that day for 1:00 p.m. in Waubonsee’s Erickson Hall Gymnasium, with the men’s game to follow at 3:00 p.m.
