(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Waubonsee Community College’s Men’s Basketball team normally does not play on Friday evenings. After the way things went against Illinois Valley Community College they might want to avoid Friday night games for the foreseeable future. In a high scoring affair the visiting Eagles (3-1) downed the Chiefs 99-87. The Veteran’s Day loss dropped Waubonsee to 1-2 on the season.

Right from the opening tipoff the pace of play was up-tempo by both teams. Waubonsee employed a man-to-man full court defense, while the Eagles ran a full-court press at Chiefs. On the strength of their three-point shooting Illinois Valley went to the locker room at halftime with a 47-40 lead. The Eagles made 6 of 15 treys (40 percent) while the Chiefs made just 2 of 7 (28 percent) from beyond the arc. Otherwise, most of the halftime statistics were fairly equal between the two teams.

Illinois Valley extended its’ lead to double-digits early in the second half. Both teams exchanged baskets for most of the period as the Eagles maintained a 10-point lead. Waubonsee trailed 71-61 with six minutes remaining before switching to a full-court press defense of their own. Illinois Valley adjusted quickly and kept the Chiefs at arm’s length the rest of the way. The difference ended up being the Eagles’ advantage from the free throw line. Illinois Valley finished 27 of 34 (79 percent) from the charity stripe, while Waubonsee was just 12 of 17 (63 percent) from the line.

The Chiefs were led in scoring by Tyrone Carey who booked 20 points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out seven assists. Dominick Martin added 16 points and Alec Goetz contributed 13 points, despite being in foul trouble most of the game. Demetrius Ewing chipped in with 10 points and Steve Green dished out four assists in a losing cause. Waubonsee will be in action again tomorrow when they host Carl Sandburg College. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m. in Waubonsee’s Erickson Hall Gymnasium. Illinois Valley will play Oakton Community College prior to that, starting at 1:00 p.m.
