Third-ranked South Suburban keeps Chiefs at bay to hang on to win

(Sugar Grove, IL.) – In a key early season test, Waubonsee Community College fell 74-64 to nationally ranked South Suburban College on the Chiefs’ home court. The Bulldogs, ranked third in the NJCAA’s Division II Pre-season poll, led 32-27 at halftime. South Suburban then built their biggest lead of the game at 14 points (58-44) midway through the second half. The Chiefs clawed their way to within five points (64-59) with 2:18 remaining. However, just as they had two other times in the final period, the Bulldogs responded and quickly built their lead back to double digits just a minute later. For the game the Chiefs committed 25 turnovers, directly resulting in 25 points for the Bulldogs. Waubonsee also shot just 18 of 28 (64 percent) from the foul line in the loss.

Tyrone Carey led Waubonsee in scoring with 18 points, while grabbing six rebounds. Germaine Roebuck added 14 points and hauled in eight rebounds, Alec Goetz booked 11 points, and Steve Green recorded four steals. Waubonsee’s next game is a week from now, Friday, November 11 when the Chiefs host Illinois Valley Community College. The tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Erickson Hall.
